Identity Authentication: Verify and Manage Trusted Identities across Your Network

Identity Authentication is the cornerstone of modern security. It ensures that the person attempting to access a system, network, or service is truly who they claim to be. From logging into online banking to unlocking a smartphone, authentication protects sensitive data and prevents unauthorized access.

Identity Authentication Types to Choose On

Here are some of the Identity Authentication types that a business could choose from.

Knowledge-Based Authentication

Passwords, PINs, and security questions are the most familiar methods. For example, when you log into your laptop, you enter a password only you should know. While convenient, these methods rely heavily on secrecy and can be vulnerable if credentials are stolen or guessed.

Possession-Based Authentication

This method requires something you physically own, such as a smart card, token, or mobile device. A common scenario is receiving a one-time passcode (OTP) on your phone when accessing online banking. Even if someone knows your password, they cannot log in without also having your device.

Inherence-Based Authentication

Biometrics like fingerprints, facial recognition, or iris scans fall under this category. Since these traits are unique to you, they provide a strong layer of security that is difficult to replicate. Unlocking your desktop with plugged in USB fingerprint scanner and another layer of authentication software with FIDO2 enabled options support secure, scalable access across physical and digital environments.

Layers Security That Works

The most powerful aspect of identity authentication is its ability to combine different methods for maximum protection. For example, online banking often requires both a password (knowledge-based) and a one-time passcode sent to your phone (possession-based). In environments demanding higher security, biometrics (inherence-based) can be added as a third factor. By layering these approaches, multi-factor authentication creates a robust barrier that makes it far more difficult for attackers to gain unauthorized access.
